Transparency is the foundation of our rankings. This page explains exactly how we evaluate national parks, where our information comes from, and how we keep our guides accurate and up to date.
Our Scoring System
Every national park is scored on a scale of 1 to 10 across seven criteria. The composite score is weighted toward what matters most to visitors: the quality of the experience itself. No park pays for a higher ranking, and no rankings are sponsored.
Scenery & Landscape (25%)
Visual impact, geological diversity, and iconic viewpoints. This is the single highest-weighted criterion because it's the primary reason most people visit a national park.
Accessibility (15%)
Ease of getting there, road access, and visitor facilities. Parks that are easier to reach score higher, but remote parks can still score well if the experience justifies the effort.
Activities & Trails (20%)
Range and quality of hikes, drives, ranger programs, and recreational opportunities. Parks with more diverse activities score higher.
Crowd Management (10%)
Crowd levels at peak times and availability of quiet spots. Parks that offer solitude even during peak season score higher.
Facilities & Infrastructure (10%)
Quality of visitor centers, campgrounds, restrooms, and shuttle systems. Well-maintained facilities improve the visitor experience.
Value (10%)
Entrance fees relative to the experience offered. Free parks like Great Smoky Mountains score especially well here.
Overall Experience (10%)
A holistic assessment that captures the "wow factor" — the overall emotional impact of a visit, beyond what the individual criteria measure.

Fact-Checking & Updates
We review and update our park guides on a rolling basis. Key facts — entrance fees, reservation requirements, road closures, and seasonal access — are verified against the official NPS website at least twice per year. When significant changes occur (new reservation systems, road openings, fee changes), we update the affected guide within 30 days.
Safety information (bear spray requirements, wildlife distances, trail difficulty ratings) is reviewed with particular care. We cross-reference NPS safety guidelines and ranger recommendations. If you spot an error or outdated information, please reach out — we take corrections seriously and update content promptly.
Editorial Independence
Our rankings and reviews are independent of advertising or affiliate relationships. We may earn commissions through affiliate links (Amazon, Expedia, Viator) when readers book hotels or purchase gear through our site, but these relationships never influence park rankings, ratings, or editorial content. No park, lodge, tour operator, or brand has ever paid for placement in our rankings.
